12/17/2015 – America’s two-parent families reach lowest point in 50 years (MarketWatch)

The modern family has replaced the traditional family. The share of children living in a two-parent household is at the lowest point in more than half a century, according to a new report, “Parenting in America,” released Thursday by the Pew Research Center, a non-profit and nonpartisan think-tank in Washington, D.C. Some 69% of children are in two-parent households today versus 73% in 2000 and 87% in 1960. Children living with two parents are more likely to experience variety of family arrangements due to increases in divorce, remarriage and cohabitation, Pew added. In fact, 62% of children live with two married parents – an all-time low. In contrast, the share of children living in one-parent households make up 26% of all households with children, up from 22% in 2000 and 9% in 1960, and were more likely to live in poverty. In 2014, 31% of children living in single-parent households were living below the poverty line versus 21% with two cohabiting parents and 10% with two married parents. In fact, more than half (57%) of those living with married parents were in households with incomes at least 200% above the poverty line versus 21% of those living in single-parent households.
